I Am: A Beautiful Idea That Can Make A Difference
Yesterday, I spotted this image of an indigenous Guatemalan woman on a t-shirt of a guy at my local cafe, and had to ask him about it.
I'm so glad I did, because there is an incredible story to the image, and the I Am Idea project behind it.
The gyst: giving Guatemalan weavers much-needed work by using their handwoven fabrics to manufacture products in Guatemala (yoga bags and straps) to be marketed through yoga studios and retailers in the U.S, Australia, and Europe.
They are actively looking for support (financial and in-kind), including ambassadors for their products. Yoga folks and those into conscious business will find this of interest - their website, mission and products are all gorgeous, by the way.
Check out their website here: theIAMidea.com
Here's the link to their Kickstarter site: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/287070615/i-am-yoga-mat-bags-and-straps
This is David, in the I AM t-shirt, at Fairfix Cafe, Fairfax, California. This is David, who has a very interesting story himself. Turns out he was just passing through my town of Fairfax to visit with a spiritual teacher (we have them in droves here!) from Western Canada. He works only in summers, and spends the rest of the time traveling the world. He's a volunteer in the I Am effort. When he described the region where the weavers live in Guatemala, I knew it well, as I spent about a month there in 2003, learning about the weavers and the Mayan culture. Our conversation started there, and went to spiritual teachers and meditation retreats (we had a same teacher / retreat experience in common), to sustainable business, to independent travel and mobile lifestyles...to how I make a living as an artist...he also keeps sketchbooks, and invited me to make a 2-minute drawing in the one he's traveling with. This just goes to show you what can happen when you take a day (or an hour) off, go out for coffee, and dare to talk to someone you don't know.
